Report - North Island 8-Ball Championship 2016

Last weekend, Snookerworld was the venue for the 2016 NZPA North Island Championship. Hosted by the NZPA, this event was another success for cuesports in New Zealand. A field of 46 players battled over both days for the titles on offer. Once again, the growth in our sport was reflected by another debutant. Exciting talent, Lucas Lin (13 years old) had a strong first showing in a tough section.

Saturday saw some fiercely contested section play for the limited qualifying spots on offer. There were more than a handful of surprising results with Damian Acraman and Brendan King doing well to qualify over more heralded names.

A 9am start on Sunday saw the cobwebs cleared quickly as the double life knockouts began. KD Singh made a deep run to the Semi-finals before succumbing to Glen Coutts. Molrudee Kasemchaiyanan, once again competing in the men’s event, had a fine day at the office including a victory over the No.2 ranked player Marvin Padrigo. Having secured 4th place in this event, Molrudee will be eager to make a push for silverware in upcoming events.

The stars of the day were returning champions Lisa Everett and Matt Edwards. Lisa successfully defended her North Island title from last year, coming from 4-1 down in the final to defeat Lorna Frost 5-4. Matt Edwards defended his title for the second year running to bring his tally of North Island titles to 4. Matt defeated Glen Coutts 7-3 in the final. At 0-2 down, Matt showed his class by taking 7 of the next 8 frames and a 3 in a row of titles.

Thank you to our sponsors, Mezz Cues, Samui Tips and Excellence Billiards for their continued support. Our next event will be the NZPA National 8 Ball Championships on April 2-3.
