Report - Auckland Regional 8-Ball 2016

This Past weekend, the first NZPA ranking event of 2016, the Auckland Regional 8 Ball Championship was played at Snookerworld. Hosted by the Auckland Pool Association (APA), the event was a great success and showcased the growing strength of Cuesports in the region. An almost full field of 44 players duelled over two days for the first ranking titles on offer for 2016. Many familiar faces returned from previous years but the growth in our sport was reflected by the new faces making their debut in NZPA ranking events, such as father and son team Dean and Bryn Murphy (aged 11).

Saturday saw a tightly contested round robin section play with the top 3 from each section qualifying. Joseph Tialata also qualified as the best 4th placed player. With the top 8 ranked players automatically qualified the stage was set for an exciting day of pool on Sunday. The ladies section play saw 4 qualifiers make it through to the Semi-Finals on Sunday.

Play on Sunday started early at 9am. The recently added Double life format in the men’s event ensured that all players would get the opportunity to show their worth. The first round saw a surprise result when Joseph Tialata sent the vastly experienced Joe Pologa to the Loser’s Bracket. Joseph’s performance, along with that of former Junior National Champion Reece Adams, highlighted the strength of the young talent on display throughout the day. The stars of the men’s event were Molrudee Kasemchaiyanan, Raymond Sayo and Matt Edwards. Molrudee, challenging herself by entering the Men’s event, showed the full benefit of her time playing in Europe by advancing to the final game of the loser’s bracket. The only people to beat her all day long were the two Main Event Finalists. Raymond Sayo negotiated a difficult path to the main event final by winning the final of the Loser’s Bracket against Molrudee. Matt Edwards once again dominated proceedings, however, only losing 3 frames on his way to the Main Event Final.

The early stages of the final were closely contested with Matt taking a 2-1 lead before showing his ability to win the next 4 frames and the final with a scoreline of 6-1. This was Matt’s 10th Auckland regional title, a record that is not likely to fall anytime soon. The ladies final saw great friends Connie Adams and Lisa Everett face each other in the final. Connie prevailed 4-3 in the final to add to her growing pool resume.

As one successful tournament comes to a close we can look forward to the rest of the pool season with anticipation. The North and South Island 8 Ball Championships are being held on March 5th and 6th. The Junior Regional 8 Ball and 9 Ball Championships are on March 12th and 13th. Entries are open now and, as always, new players are welcome.

Thank you to all players who took part in the Auckland Regional 8 Ball Championships, along with APA for hosting and to Snookerworld for providing the venue. We have had a fantastic start to the season and can expect much more of the same as throughout the pool calendar.

Until next time….
